    • Lots of space but cannot boot MacOS

The Seagate 6TB USB external hard drive arrived quickly. The power supply adapter includes international heads to work in many countries around the world which is a really nice touch. The case is plastic and, while not appearing overly robust, won't cause problems in a desktop environment. On Mac OS Sierra (10.12) with the drive reformatted to HFS+, copying a single 1.76TB file took just over 7 hours which is approximately 540MBps, or 85% of the USB 3.0 theoretical transfer speed. For sustained writing, this is reasonable for an archival unit. The drive was unable to be used as a boot disk for for a Macbook Pro Retina or a Macbook Air. Formatting as a single (empty) partition and installing a fresh OS (Yosemite or Sierra) didn't solve the issue. After trying multiple permutations and combinations of partitioning and OS options over a period of two weeks, I've concluded that this drive is not useful as a backup boot disk. It's great strength is for archival storage and even Time Machine backups; however, you cannot hope to keep a bootable recovery partition on this drive. Since I have other many other Seagate and WD drives which are successful at booting these macs, it's a compromise I'm totally willing to accept for 6TB of archived media.
